According to 7Tune blog, the FT-86 concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show (designed by the European team) didn't get the green-light and now, the U.S. design studio will come up with the final design of the FT-86.
Perhaps Toyota saw what happened with Nissan's Juke, where the European and Japanese design studios worked together and thus decided that it's best to let the Americans design the exterior...
