Ferrari & Porsche go green. Let the battle begin!

Ferrari will indeed present a hybrid concept in Geneva, the 599 Hybrid. But this was more or less expected. The surprise though came from Porsche with the unveiling of the 918 Spyder plug-in Hybrid. OK, Porsche  will soon start producing the Cayenne Hybrid, but now we are talking about serious supercars!

Ferrari 599 Hybrid concept

Since Ferrari is considered as more hardcore sports car manufacturer, compared to Porsche (since SUV and entry level models are terms unknown for Maranello), I guess the possibility for a hybrid Ferrari is upsetting a lot of people.

Except the photos, no details have been officially revealed. What we can see though is a prototype having a V12 engine up front and an electric motor on the rear transaxle. plus a versions of the  F1 inspired KERS.

Porsche 918 Spyder concept

The 918 concept is powered by a 500 hp V8 engine and two electric motors, one per axle, adding 218 hp. Porsche claims that the 918 can reach 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, while achieving 78 miles per gallon (I guess this is not when trying to hit 100 km/h in 3.2 sec...).

The system "used" in the 918 concept is a parallel hybrid with four modes, configuring the powertrains for anything from max efficiency to max performance. Don't expect it though to travel far using electrons only, just 16 miles. Regenerative braking, a push-to-pash button and a Race Hybrid mode are among the highlights.

The design of the 918 looks a bit like the Carrera GT, so could it be also a glimpse at the next super duper Porsche? We may have to wait a few years in order to find out, but Porsche claims that this concept offers a glimpse at future interiors.
