Honda feels jealous and recalls Jazz/Fit & City

Honda recalled 646,000 units of its Jazz/Fit and City cars globally (sold in Europe, North America, South America, South Africa and Asia, but not Japan) over a faulty window switch. There were three reported cases of fires due to the defect, two in the United States and one in South Africa in which a toddler was killed on her second birthday in Cape Town in September last year when the car she was sleeping in caught fire.
.
Honda UK said that water was entering the drivers' window of its Jazz model and reaching a master power switch, potentially causing the switch to over heat and "potentially cause fire.

Murcielago successor undergoes testing in Sweden

Lamborghini is already testing Murcielago's successor in Sweden and this is the clearest view of it yet. It is expected to be launched in 2011 and to be powered by a V12 engine. No matter what its name will be, the top Lambo will be made largely from carbonfibre in order to reduce the total weight of the car.

Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini's R&D chief, said in an interview this month at the Detroit auto show (earlier post) "the weight-to-power ratio will be the key factor" so you get the picture.

Volvo announces new 2.0L GTDi engine

Volvo own turbocharged engines were always good, especially the five-cylinder ones, but during the recent years, up to 2.0 litres, the engines were coming from Ford. If you ask me, not a good thing at all.

Volvo at last introduced  an all-new four-cylinder 2.0L GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine, which will be fitted in the Volvo S80, V70 and XC60.

The new petrol engine produces 203 hp and pumps out 300 Nm of torque from 1750 rpm. The engine utilises variable timing for both camshafts and will be offered in combination with Volvo's automatic six-speed Powershift transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

According to Volvo, "the turbine housing is integrated into the manifold, an efficient solution with which Volvo already had previous good experience. The difference is that the new manifold and turbine housing are made of sheet steel instead of a casting. The sheet is lighter and more compact and, above all, this system generates less heat owing to its extra insulating layer. This allows high gas flow temperature and thus more efficient combustion."

"A manifold made of sheet steel is admittedly nothing new but so far it has only been used in combination with cast turbine housing. The new, fully integrated turbo package made entirely of sheet steel is a world innovation and has been patented by Volvo."

Now, why this engine will not be fitted in the C30 and S40??? I don't get it...

Suzuki Kizashi comes to Europe

Ah, Suzukis... I see then every day at work and I have to be honest, I never liked them. I have driven the Liana (what an awful car!), the SX4 and the Grand Vitara. Still don't like them though...

Anyway, Suzuki Kizashi (???) is already on sale in Japan and US and now, Suzuki will present the European version at Geneva Motor Show. I am pretty sure that it made sense to the marketing people for the US, but come on, now we are talking about Europe. Who will buy a big Suzuki sedan? There are so many choices, e.g. Opel Insignia, Mazda 6, Ford Mondeo, Seat Exceo, Toyota Avensis just to name a few.

Kizashi will be offered with all-wheel drive as standard, while it will be powered by the same 2.4 L petrol engine used on the USDM model. Even if the dynamics of the car are good, engine technology, performance and refinement are definitely not the strong points of Suzuki making it difficult to sell Kizashi in Europe. Unless of course if it is a bargain...

French magazine provides illustrations of new Peugeot 208

French magazine L'Automobile provided the two illustrations you see. Well, once upon a time, Peugeot had very nice looking cars in its lineup. Then, they run out of ideas and used the same theme again and again. At the end, they gave it a try for something different (e.g. 3008)... and now this?! Oh boy, this is the end...

Massive Toyota recall spreads to China and Europe

Toyota has faced a big problem with more than 7 million vehicles in the US, which have been recalled, but now the company revealed that the recall will be extended to Europe and China as well. The announcement came hours after Toyota added 1.09 million more to the number of cars recalled in the US.

It is thought that at least 75,000 vehicles will be recalled in China, while the scale of the European recall is undetermined but expected to be revealed soon. However, according to the company, there is no need or intention of halting vehicle production at its European factories.

The announcements sent Toyotas shares tumbling heavily, adding a further 4.3 per cent fall to a rout that began last week.

American owners of the affected vehicles are being asked to bring them in for inspection after a series of incidents in which the accelerator pedals became stuck in the depressed position, causing accidents in some cases.

One problem appears to centre on the floor mats, which can come unstuck and cause the pedals to catch. The second, more serious, problem is mechanical.

Toyota has said that the accelerator pedal can, in a worst case, stick in a partially depressed position when the mechanism becomes worn. On its US website, the company recommends that drivers step on the brake pedal with both feet using firm and steady pressure.

Finally Saab has a future called Saab Spyker Automobiles

Following all the recent drama, Saab is finally sold to Spyker Cars N.V., which intends to form a new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles. Although no officials details were revealed, the unofficial scenario is that Spyker will contribute $74 million in cash for the deal and the European Investment Bank will provide $556 million. GM will maintain about $326 million in shares, or 1% of voting rights.

Turning Saab to profit is going to be a very difficult task (GM didn't manage to do that), especially if you consider that is going to  be owned by a company with no experience mass-manufacturing cars.

Is the horsepower war ending at last?

Is the insane horsepower war coming to an end? I really hope so, as so far, companies seem to care only about the horsepower output. A brilliant example is the Veyron, a car with arbitrary targets of 1000 hp and 250 mph and 0-60-mph in under 3 seconds.

Lotus philosophy of performance through low weight and simplicity is more suitable when it comes to high-performance car design and now Lamborghini seems to realize this... although not for the right reason. As Gordon Murray has said, "Weight saving should be by design and not a post process. Weight is the car designer's biggest enemy."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quoted text

"It has come to the point where acceleration equals consumption," said Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of the Italian automaker. "More consumption means increased CO2 emissions".

Winkelmann, who fears future government regulations could restrict engine performance, said Lamborghini's r&d spending will emphasize taking weight out of vehicles.

The pursuit of top speed is limited by the physics of aerodynamic resistance, Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini's r&d chief, said in an interview this month at the Detroit auto show. Once a vehicle reaches 211 mph, there is a declining rate of return for each additional horsepower needed to push the vehicle faster, he said.

Also, there are few places in the world where a driver can go that fast. So Reggiani said Lamborghini will focus on acceleration instead of top speed. The most effective way to do that, he said: take weight out of the car.

"The weight-to-power ratio will be the key factor," Reggiani said. "We will use composite materials in the right place, when it also has the right cost, stiffness and mechanical characteristics."

That could prove to be an expensive solution. Lamborghini has used mostly high-strength steel in its vehicles' structures and body panels. But Reggiani said the automaker will make greater use of aluminum and carbon fiber.

Lamborghini also is investigating start-stop technology for city driving to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide. But with a V10 or V12 engine, the firing order is faster than a typical four-cylinder with start-stop.

As a result, Reggiani said, missing a cylinder or two on vehicle restart could cause more pollution than not having the technology at all. The same theory applies to cylinder deactivation at cruising speeds.

"Where is the supplier who can provide the right starter and alternator for our engine?" Reggiani asked. "That's a lot of cylinders. It's easy to make a mistake."
